First Time at Serenity Yoga? Everything You Need to Know (Shalas, Parking & Etiquette)

  • 3 min read

Walking into a new yoga space for the first time can feel surprisingly intimidating—especially in a new country. Questions like “Do I need to book in advance?”, “What should I wear?”, or “Where do I even go?” are common for first-time visitors in Bali.

At Serenity Eco Guesthouse, yoga is designed to be welcoming, accessible, and low-pressure. If it’s your first time practicing here, this guide will walk you through exactly what to expect, so you can arrive feeling calm, confident, and ready to roll out your mat.

The Yoga Shalas at Serenity

Serenity has multiple open-air yoga shalas, each with its own atmosphere and energy. You’ll find the shala name listed on the class schedule and signage around the property.

  1. Banyan Shala

One of Serenity’s larger spaces, Banyan Shala is surrounded by greenery and designed for group classes, workshops, and teacher training. It has a spacious, grounded feel that’s ideal for dynamic flows and stronger practices.

  1. Nirvana

Connected to Buddah dorm, and overlooking the pool, Nirvana is another spacious shala equipped with air con and with all the equipment you will need ready. This is where specialty practices such as aerial yoga, meditation, and workshops are often held.

  1. Conexion Shala

This shala also overlooks the swimming pool and is surrounded by greenery. This shala is above the spa.

If you’re unsure which shala your class is in, reception staff or signage on-site will point you in the right direction.

There are toilets and showers next to every shala. The staff will often set out your mat and equipment you might need as well as offering you mosquito lotion so you can comfortably relax in your poses.

Where to Park & How to Arrive

If you’re arriving by scooter or car, Serenity has on-site parking available for yoga guests.

  • Park in the designated guest parking area

  • Walk to reception first to register

  • Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before class if it’s your first visit

At reception, you’ll:

  • Let them know which class you’re attending

  • Purchase a drop-in or use your class pass

  • Receive directions to your shala

No stress, no apps, no QR codes required

Do I Need to Book Yoga in Advance?

Short answer: No.

Serenity operates on a show up and drop in model for most classes. That means:

  • No complicated booking platforms

  • No advance reservations required for regular classes

  • Just arrive, sign in, and practice

However, there is still the option to book online.

For special events, workshops, or very popular classes, advance booking may be recommended, but daily yoga classes are intentionally kept flexible for travelers.

What to Wear to Yoga in Indonesia

Comfort is key. You don’t need anything fancy.

Recommended:

  • Tank top or t-shirt

Please avoid:

  • Very short shorts

  • Clothing that may feel uncomfortable in an open-air, shared space

Serenity is relaxed and international, but respectful attire is always appreciated.

What’s Included (And What You Don’t Need to Bring)

One of the biggest perks of practicing at Serenity is that everything is provided.

Yoga matsBlocks, straps, bolstersAerial hammocks (for aerial classes)

You’re welcome to bring your own mat if you prefer, but it’s absolutely not required.

Yoga Etiquette at Serenity

To keep the space peaceful and enjoyable for everyone:

  • Put phones on silent (or leave them outside the shala)

  • Respect your own limits, rest whenever needed
